"The sad things that happened long ago will always remain part of who we are just as the glad and gracious things will too, but instead of being a burden of guilt, recrimination, and regret that make us constantly stumble as we go, even the saddest things can become, once we have made peace with them, a source of wisdom and strength for the journey that still lies ahead."
Frederick Buechner
Counseling Philosophy
The counseling relationship is unlike any other. It is a unique space in which you are invited to explore the stories housed within you, the relational dynamics and struggles that hinder the fullness of your life, and to risk with another as you move toward change.
We are not able to see our own faces and it often takes the face of another to see where we are hiding, fearful, hopeful, and aching. Life will never be void of pain...together, though, we are able to hold, receive, and live differently in our pain than we ever could alone. I invite you to risk being known in the dark and light spaces of your soul and there hope for peace.
Theory and Approach
My theory is an eclectic mix of psychodynamic, existential, and relational categories. What that really means is I believe it is important for us to explore our unconscious motivations and beliefs in order to understand where we feel stuck, helpless, destructive, and alone. We often don’t know why we do what we do, or feel how we feel, therapy is a place to consider our lives and discover new ways to live the life we really want.
The relationship we build is a key component in our work together, it is a place to gather more information about the ways you relate to your world and to risk revealing your true voice.
In the midst of our work together, I will also be paying attention to your deeper questions of existence and meaning. Often our beliefs and experiences can contradict each other and create a sense of isolation and tension that unless faced we will work to numb in potentially harmful ways.
Finally, research has shown that our body's respond chemically to the emotions and circumstances of our lives. Thus, it is imperative that together we work to help you understand the way your physical body is processing your emotional experiences.
